Riva Lee Asbell
Ms. Asbell is the principal of Riva Lee Asbell Associates, an ophthalmic reimbursement consulting firm located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida that specializes in surgical coding, Evaluation and Management and Eye coding, Compliance, EHR, and overall ophthalmic reimbursement.
The former founding administrator of the Departments of Ophthalmology of Drexel University (formerly Hahnemann University) in Philadelphia and UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Camden, her memberships include the American Association of Ophthalmic Administrators, the American Association of Ophthalmic Executives, and the Association of University Professors in Ophthalmology - Administrators' Section (past president). She served on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Ophthalmic Administrators, the AUPO Administrators' Section, and the Practice Management Coordinating Committee of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
Ms. Asbell contributes regularly to Retina Today, Ophthalmic ASC, Ocular Surgery News, Retinal Physician, Ophthalmology Management and EyeWorld, and serves on the Editorial Board of the several of these publications. She recently has written a reimbursement text, "Tips on Ophthalmic Surgical Coding by Subspecialty" and "A Guide to Ophthalmic Reimbursement in ASCs". She has authored 300 reimbursement articles and two books, one on "Management of Complications in Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery" (co-editor) in addition to "Tips".
Ms. Asbell serves as a consultant to various private and government agencies. Her most recent academic appointment is Clincial Assistant Professor of Surgery (Ophthalmology) at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at Camden.
An active participant in teaching ophthalmic coding and reimbursement nationwide, she has been a Coding Instructor for numerous national and state societies.
